Anthony Keids,Michael Balzary (Sonradan Flea olacak) Hillel Slovak farklı yerlerden gelmişler,Fairfax lisesinde karşılaşmışlardı. Müzik derslerinde Hillel’in gitara,Michael’in trompete yatkınlığı ortaya çıkmıştı. Ama Anthony’nin herhangi bir enstürmana yatkınlığı yoktu. Bu yüzden Hillel ve Michael,Anthony’yi şiir yazmaya ittiler. Michael trompet çalarak funk müzik yapamayacağını anlayınca Hillel’in de yardmıyla bas gitara geçti (P.S: o zaman kim derdi ki bu adam geleceğin en iyi basçısı olacak diye) ilk olarak grubun adı “Los Faces” olark belirlendi. Basta Michael,gitarda Hillel ve vokalde de Anthony vardı. Kaydettikler ilk şarkının adı “The Organic Anti-Beat Box Band”di. Grup elemanları farklı lise grupları kurmaya başladılar. Bunlardan biri 1977de Hillel Slovak,Jack Irons,Alain Johainnes ve Todd Strassman’ın kurduğu “Chain Reaction”dı. Sonra grubun adı 1978de “Anthym” oldu ve Michael adını Flea olarak değiştirerek gruba dahil oldu. Kısa süre sonra da gruba Anthony Keids katıldı ve bu sefer grubun adı “What Is This” olarak değiştirildi. Striptiz kulüplerinde çıkıp underground’da adını duyurmaya başladığındaysa grubun adı “Tony Flow & The Miraculously Masters Of Mayhem”dı. Grubun kadrosu Anthony Keids,Hillel Slovak,Flea ve Jack Irons’dan oluşuyordu. “Çorap şov”larını ilk kez 80′lerin başında Kit Kat adlı bir striptiz kulübünde yaptılar. Cinsel organlarına taktıkları çorap dışında çırılçıplak sahneye çıkıp şarkılarını çalmışlarıdı.
Guptaki ayrılıkların en önemlisi bu dönemde yaşandı. Flea grubu bırakıp “Fear” adlı bir gruba geçti fakat geri dönmesi uzun sürmedi. 1983 yılında Flea’nın dönüşüyle grup “Red Hot Chili Peppers” adını aldı. (P.S:Anthony bu ismi seçerken Louis Armstrong’un 1920′lerdeki grubu Chili Peppers’dan esinlenmişti) Verdikleri kulüp konserleri kısa sürede EMI’ın kulağına gitti grup takibe alındı. Menajerler RHCPın sahne şovunu beğenince hemen sözleşmeler imzalandı ve ilk albümün çalışmalrına başlandı. İlk albümleri “The Red Hot Chili Peppers” büyük bir ticari başarıya ulaşmasa da kendi çaplarında bir fan kitlesi elde etmeleri için yeterliydi. Verdikleri Amerika turnesiyle underground kesimde oldukça ses getirmeyi başardılar. (P.S: What Is This grubuyla sözleşmeleri bulunan Jack Iron ve Hillel Slovak ilk albümde çalmadı onların yerini gitarda Jack Sherman ve davulda Cliff Martinez doldurdu) Fakat Red Hot Chili Peppers’ın çorap şovu,sansür kurulu PMRCnin dikkatini çekti ve kurul konserlerin iptal edilmesi için uğraşmaya başladı. 1000 dolar ödeyerek paçayı sıyırsalar da PMRC daha sonra da başlarına bela olacaktı.
Konserden sonra hemen ikinci albüm çalışmalarına başladılar. Bu sefer gitarda Hillel Slovak vardı. 1985′de “Freakey Styley” çıktı. (P.S:Freakey Styley funk’a yakın sound’ndan dolayı diğer albümlerden biraz daha farklı olarak değerlendirilir) Bu dönemde Cliff Martinez gruptan ayrıldı ve Jack Iron Gruba geri döndü. Bylece RHCP orijinal kadrosuna kavuşmuş oldu. O zamanki en başarılı RHCP albümüyse 1987′de yayınlanan “Uplift Mofo Party Plan” oldu.
Buna karşın grup üylerinin her birinin uyuşturucu kullanması konserlerin iptal olmasına neden oluyordu. Hillel ve Anthony’nin eroin bağımlılığı kritik bir noktaya gelmişti ve ikisi de bundan kurtulmaları gerektğinin farkındaydı. Birbirlerinden ayrı kalınca eroinden de uzak durabileceklerini düşünerek grubu dağıttılar. 27 Haziraz 1988′de Hillel Slovak evinde ölü bulundu. Jack Irons bu ölümü kabullenemeyeceğini söyleyerek gruptan ayrıldı. Anthony Keids ise bir süre sonra rehabilite görmeye başladı. 88 yılının sonunda Flea ve Anthony tekrar birleşme ve devam etme kararı aldılar. Gruptaki iki önemli boşluğu doldurmak kolay olmadı. Önce John Frusciante’yi buldular. John grubun hayranıydı ve gruba katılması teklif edildiğinde teklifi tereddütsüz kabul etmişti. Ama davulcu bulmak bu kadar kolay olmadı. Anthony ve Flea birçok davulcu denemelerine rağmen istediklerini bulamadılar. Sonra seçmlerde Chad Smith’le karşılaştılar ve Chad böylece gruba dahil olmuş oldu. Bundan sonraki ilk albümleri “Mother’s Milk” büyük bir başarıya ulaştı. Bu albümün ilk single’ı “Knock Me Down” Hillel Slovak anısına çıktı. Bu albümden sonra RHCP,EMI’dan ayrılarak Warner Bros.’a geçti.
91 yılındaki “Blood,Sugar,Sex,Magic” albümse RHCPın underground’dan çıkıp mainstream’e geçişinin en büyük kanıtıdır. MTV’nin “Breaking The Girl”ü,”Give It Away”i,”Under The Bridge”i pompalaması,albümün 2 milyon üzerinde satmasını ve onları rock müziğin zirvesine oturtmasını sağlamıştı. Ama bunlar John Frusciante’nin mutlu olması için yeterli değildi. O da yavaş yavaş uyuşturucu batağına giriyordu. John 7 Mayıs 1992′de grubu terk etti. John’un ayrılığı grubu derinden sarstı ve karanlık döneme girildi. Grup ne olursa olsun müziğe devam edecekti. Dave Navarro gruba dahil oldu. 1995 yılında Dave Navarro’lu albüm “One Hot Minute” yayınlandı. (Biraz da ön yargıdan olsa gerek) bu albüm pek sevilemedi. “Aeroplane” ve “My Friends” single’larının satışları kötü değildi ama Blood Sugar Sex Magic”le karşılaştırılamazdı bile. 1998′deDave Navarro RHCP’ı bıraktığnı açıkladı. RHCP’da durumlar böyleyken John Frusciante de iyiye doğru gitmiyordu. Uyuşturucu kullanmaktan tanınmayacak bir hale gelmişti. İki solo albüm çıkarmıştı ama hayatı tehlkeye giriyordu. Dave Navarro ayrılınca gruba yeni bir gitarist alınması yerne John’un rehabilitasyon görüp gruba geri döndürülmesi için uğraşmaya karar verildi. 1998 yılında John gruba geri döndü ve grubun şimdi mevcut olan kadrosuna (bir daha hiç bozulmaması dileğiyle) tekrar kavuşuldu.
8 Haziran 1999′da çıkan “Californication” albümü John Frusciante’nin dönüşünü hemen belli ediyordu. Bu albüm büyük bir ticari başarıya da ulaştı.
Californication 3 yılda 5 milyona yakın satmıştı. 2002 yılının Temmuz ayında By The Way albümünü çıkardılar. yeni şeyler deneyen grup bu albümüyle de listelerde iki numaraya kadar yükseldi.
Bu albümden sonra “Greatest Hits” ve “Live At Hyde Park” olarak iki albüm daha çıkardılar. “Greatest Hits” albümündeki iki yeni şarkı “History” ve “Fortune Faded” çok ses getirmese de bütün albümleri mevcut bulunan fanların greatest hits albümünü almaları için bir sebep oldu. Live At Hyde Park da iki CDlik Hyde Park’taki konser kayıtları olarak piyasaya sürüldü. (bu iki albümün alt arda çıkması biraz dinlenmeye ihtiyaçları olduğunu gösteriyordu sanki)
Son günlerde de “Stadium Arcadium” adlı yeni albümlerini ve “Dani California” single’larını yayınladılar. Bu albüm için şimdiden birşey demek biraz zor gibi görünüyor. Zaman gösterecek albümün ne kadar iyi veya kötü olduğunu.
Bütün bu değişikliklere,sarsıntılı dönemlere rağmen RHCP ilk günkü gibi ayakta ve genç. Öyle görünüyor ki bu adamlar ölene kadar beraberler ve genç kalmaya devam edecekler.
